So if you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that I recently made myself a TBR jar – To Be Read. The premise of this is to write down the titles of books on scraps of paper, pop them in the jar and then when you’re ready to read a new book, pick one out and boom – you’re off!
My main reason for getting involved in this for 2017 is that it’s one of my resolutions to do more of what I love – and something I’ve really lacked in 2016 is the ability to sit down with a good book and immerse myself in another, fictional world. So I’m sorting that out, one book at a time.
I’m not particularly fussed about hitting a certain number of books over 2017, but I’ve seen people going for 52 (one a week), which I’m hoping is in the realm of possibility for me. Failing that, at least one each fortnight (so 26 in 2017). Someone on Twitter also suggested putting £5 in a jar every time you finish a book for savings. This is a great idea and hopefully I’m going to do this too – fingers crossed it actually works for me!
My plan isn’t just to read a book, though. I want to journal/review each and every book I read, which is a heck of a lot easier when I’ve already got a blog going! This means you can expect a few more book reviews over 2017 and, if people like them, perhaps I’ll continue! The reason I want to do this is twofold:
1. I took a class at university and part of our “homework” each week was to write a page about the book after finishing. It enabled us to develop our opinions of the books before going to the next seminar, but also helped us to figure out ourselves what the book was about, why (or if) it was important and how it affected us. It was a great exercise!
2. I want to share the books with all of you! Even if I don’t give a book 10/10, that doesn’t mean I don’t recommend it. And even if I don’t recommend it, I think people should develop their own opinions rather than blindly following mine. I want to open up opportunity for discussion – talking about books is just as, if not more important than reading them.
So here we go, I can’t wait to see how this goes, but I know it’ll be a fun challenge!
- Catch 22
- To Kill A Mockingbird
- Small Great Things
- The Vegetarian
- The Last Act of Love
- The Rosie Effect
(There are way too many to write them all down, but I’m always open for more!)
