Tips for working out when you really don’t want to

We’ve all had those days. The ones that start off full of motivation to get through a long day at work, where you’re envisaging yourself dashing home and getting in some form of exercise before you collapse on the sofa and veg out for the rest of the evening.

Oh, you mean that’s just me? Well anyway, I’ve compiled a list of top tips that will hopefully motivate you to get out there rather than give in to the comfort that only a bag of Minstrels can bring.

Put on your kit

Because the feelings of guilt when you take it off without having done any form of exercise will be way too much for you to handle. Also check yourself out in the mirror – that’s your super-hot professional athlete look. You rock that.

The post-exercise treat

Ok so… totally not the point of doing it and a lot of running guides will tell you not to do it, but treating yourself after a workout can sometimes be so good! If nothing else, you’ve got to eat something when you’re done. I’ve taken part in running races where my motivation for the last mile was purely the snack that would be in my goodie bag at the end. If it gets you out, I say go for it.

Remind yourself of how good you’ll feel when it’s done

Ahhh, yes. That post-workout buzz. That sense that you’ve just done something incredible and you’re so happy that you delude yourself into thinking you want to go again. But seriously, you’ll be proud of yourself and your body will thank you (once it’s stopped aching).

Tomorrow can be rest day

Sometimes the best motivation is the thought of not working out. Yep, weird concept, but if you’re like me (I try to run every other day, though every day is kind of an ‘on’ day as I regularly walk 3+ miles to work and back), those rest days are so, so good. The idea of getting home, kicking off my shoes and doing nothing is bliss. If I skip tonight’s work out, then I’ll have to go tomorrow, so I might as well get it over and done with. (And also avoid prolonged guilt for not running in X number of days).

Just 5 minutes…

You don’t have to work out for long. So yes, it’s recommended that you exercise for 30 minutes each day, but sometimes that’s not plausible. Just think though – would you rather sit in and feel bad about the fact you didn’t exercise at all, or would you prefer to be perhaps a little disappointed, but glad that you did 5 minutes of it at least?

Bubble baths and steamy showers

Scented muscle soak, your favourite Spotify playlist and a good hour of true peace. There’s nothing quite like that feeling after a work out. And on occasions where you don’t have that time, even a hot shower is absolute bliss. You’ve worked hard, you deserve that shower!

You are strong

The biggest motivator of all is the fact that you are strong. Yes, you! You can do it, no matter how much you try to convince yourself that you can’t. Your body is capable of great things and your less positive thoughts are way bigger challenges to overcome than your physical capabilities. Basically, you got dis.
